“Studying opens up the mind and is good for the body, just like sport”, the wisdom of Italian millennial diver Antonio Volpe

“Diving here in Naples, at Mostra d’Oltremare’s pool, where legends such as Di Biasi and Cagnotto have competed before, is a unique experience, so great that I would dream about it every day before participating in the 2019 Universiade”. The blue eyes of Antonio Volpe, child prodigy millennial diver born in 2000, sparkle with passion and complete dedication to the 10m specialty in diving, where competition is at its maximum. “I do not fear my opponents, I know they are all strong. I just focus on giving my best”, says the young athlete, who on July 7th placed 12th in the preliminaries to advance to the finals, scheduled on Monday July 8th at Mostra d’Oltremare’s Swimming Pool, after securing a spot in the semi-finals. A first year Pharmacy student at Cosenza University – one more exam until he gets back on track with his studies -, Volpe already knows what he wants to do in the future, showing a wisdom that is typical of seasoned athletes: “I would like to work in this field one day, after graduation. It would be a dream to combine academics and sport; plus, studying is good for your heart and opens the mind, just like physical activity is good to the body”. This is the first Universiade and the second time in Naples for the young athlete from Cosenza, in love with the cheers of Neapolitan people, who are “able of giving enough encouragement for a perfect execution at the springboard”. It goes without saying that Volpe hopes to go to the Olympics in the future. “It is too soon to talk about Tokyo 2020. For the time being I participated in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, and at the end of July I will compete at the Foro Italico in Rome. Little by little, I am building my career, being aware of my objectives, of my potential and what I need to work on in order to improve”.
