Interview with Diego Saccà, head coach of the Italian women’s rugby sevens team for the 2019 Universiade

“The field of play always tells the truth, besides luck or misfortune, and its verdict is clear. Yesterday’s result tells us we have to do more and better in order to compete at the same level of France and South Africa, two of the strongest top-tier teams in women’s rugby sevens for this tournament.” Diego Saccà, head coach of the Italian women’s rugby sevens team, acknowledges the defeat and the fair elimination of his girls after the round phase, beaten in both matches which took place on July 6th at the stadium in the former NATO base in Bagnoli. ” The most important thing was to confront with other realities, tougher and more expert than our team. We may not have a deep knowledge of our rivals’ strength, but competing against them helps us improve as a team.  Now it is time to work hard, to join as many competitions as possible, and to learn from this extraordinary experience in the 2019 Universiade, the first one for the Italian rugby players”, says the coach, revealing some details about the future tasks of his team: “Next week we will be in Kazan, Russia, for a tournament we qualified for during a previous grand prix in Paris, France.  This is a fundamental step in order to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. After that, we will fly to Ukraine. The month of July is full of sports competitions.”
