Women’s basketball team from Portugal rises on the third step of the podium in the bronze finals at Palabarbuto

“The secret of our victory at the bronze finals? We played defense and put all our energy, heart and talent into this challenge”. Ricardo Vasconcelos, head coach of the Portuguese women’s basketball team which, on July 10th, seized the bronze medal during the final against Japan at Fuorigrotta’s Palabarbuto, has no doubt about it. “The girls have grown up and gained confidence in their potential, which is probably what allowed us to be a step ahead of our Japanese opponents”, explains coach Vasconcelos after the match. This is the second Universiade, both for him and some of his team’s players: an experience that “as both a selector and father I recommend to everyone, because it is the perfect example of how sport and study can be combined, without having to give up either of them”, he says as the interview comes to an end.
